MOS 0311 - Rifleman, Marine Infantry; MOS 8151 - Marine Security Guard - MSGs guard perimeters of all Naval bases and embassies. Perhaps the most difficult job in the Corps because running the gates on a base is so boring until an attack comes when a split second of hesitation can kill hundreds. If an MSG fails, as in Tehran 1979, US Embassy in Iran is overtaken and held for years. That was the opening of the war on terror. April 18, 1983 US Embassy Beirut is destroyed by 2,500 lb charge. MSG Cpl Robert McMaugh is KIA along with 60 other civilians. October 23, 1983 BLT 1/8 Barracks is destroyed by largest conventional bomb blast ever studied by specialists, equal to 12,000 pounds of TNT. 241 Marines died and 80 wounded in the single highest loss in Marine Corps history except for one day in WWII.
